Donuts in an Empty Field is a contemporary, realistic fiction, and Young Adult novel about two best friends, the local food challenge, and letting go of anger.

This excerpt is from chapter one.

Vanessa and Nichole just found a mysterious list of six items with the first crossed. Vanessa’s date wrote the note before he died.

“It’s a bucket list,” Nichole explains.
“But why?”
“What do you mean, why? Most people have them,” Nichole says.
“He would have told me.”
Nichole gives me a funny look. “Seems like your dad though. I mean, c’mon, win a food challenge?”
“Yeah, it does kind of sound like him, but only one has been crossed out.” I frown, thinking of everything Dad never got a chance to accomplish.

What will Vanessa do with this piece of her dad – his unfinished bucket list?

Letting go of anger is life’s greatest challenge.

Vanessa hasn’t been the same since her father’s death. A hero until the end, he died saving a restaurant owner’s son from a burning building. Nessa blames the boy, but her best friend Nichole thinks it’s time to let go of the past. In a last ditch effort to break Nessa’s obsession, Nichole hopes signing up for the local food challenge will bust her out of her shell. A single choice defines the road ahead for Nessa. Doing the right thing isn’t easy, but living with the consequences of doing nothing might be worse.

  1. Well I’m with Christina, poignant little snippet. I wouldn’t have any desire to accomplish someone else’s bucket list though, personally. I was thinking perhaps it was a clue? Enjoyed it, no matter what the backstory is!

  2. Sad how her dad died without accomplishing everything on his bucket list. We definitely learn more about the family history in this snippet. Glad to see you continue participating with us!

  3. Very emotionally charged snippet. Maybe the bucket list isn’t for her to finish but hopefully it will teach her not to waste time living and loving, tomorrow is never a guarantee.
