Donuts in an Empty Field (For the Love of Donuts Book 1)

Letting go of anger is life’s greatest challenge.

Vanessa Smith hasn’t been the same since her father’s death. A hero until the end, he died saving a restaurant owner’s wife and son from a burning building. Nessa has always blamed the boy, Ben, for her loss, and her thoughts are consumed with ways to make him as miserable as she is.

Nichole Adams knows Nessa can never heal until she learns to let go of her hatred, but bringing back her best friend is proving more difficult than she could’ve imagined. In a last ditch effort to break Nessa’s obsession, Nichole hopes signing up for the local food challenge is just the thing to bust her out of her shell.

A single choice defines the road ahead for Nessa. Doing the right thing isn’t easy, but living with the consequences of doing nothing might be worse.

Don’t forget about the donuts… Because it’s all about the donuts!

I’m putting together a fantastic month of fun filled donut-themed parties in June. Why June? Because, Dear Reader, June 3rd this year is National Donut Day. My upcoming release is not all about donuts, but it does feature donuts and food and challenges. Don’t miss Donuts in an Empty Field (For the Love of Donuts Book 1) coming June 3rd, 2016.

All About the Donuts: Local Donut Shop Review – Henry’s Donuts in Monroe, WA

Review criteria:

Most popular donut at the shop: Maple Bar

Signature shop donut: Bacon Maple Bar

Most popular US donut: Glazed

2nd most popular US donut: Boston crème

Donut Hole: Glazed Donut Holes

What I tried:

Maple Bar, Bacon Maple Bar, Glazed, Bostome Crème, Old Fashioned, Donut Holes

What to expect:

Henry’s has a great location in Monroe with their storefront facing the main road. They are open for lengthy hours, so don’t worry about getting there before they close! They also make their donuts more often than just in the morning so you can enjoy fresh donuts at any time of day. Their dough is to die for on the fresh donuts and the shop smells wonderful, like newly made donuts of course! They have a selection of all your favorite donuts, but nothing out of the ordinary more than the bacon maple bar (is this a classic yet?).

My favorite:

The hours! How grand that a donut shop stays open so late! My favorite donut so far is their donut hole.

Author Goals and Accomplishments from 2015 and Future Goals for 2016

Remember this post back in 2014?

2015 Writing Goals:

  1. Create audiobook version of poetry book, Wandering Imagination
  2. Write manuscript for book 1 of Fantasy trilogy
  3. Send Children’s Book to Publishers
  4. Write manuscript of The Geocache Killer
  5. Get At One’s Beast 15 reviews (Currently have: Goodreads -13, Amazon -11)
  6. Get Ataxia and the Ravine of Lost Dreams 20 reviews (Currently have: Goodreads -9, Amazon -9)
  7. Finished and Published audiobook copy of At One’s Beast
  8. Submit some short stories to contests/publications
  9. Finish YA manuscript Donuts in an Empty Field

How did I do?

I didn’t create the audiobook for my poetry book yet but I futzed with Paul’s recording equipment and think I’m ready to get this one done next year in preparation for narrating my own audiobook for Donuts in an Empty Field (For the Love of Donuts Book 1).

I’ve decided not to write that fantasy trilogy I talked about, yet that is because I started a different sort of trilogy and it took off with my imagination. I’m set to publish Cafe Connections (Aster & Tilde Book 1) Halloween of 2016 unless it is picked up by a traditional publisher. Stay tuned for more information on that book.

I didn’t send any manuscripts to publishers or agents this year as I was busy writing more books! I have more plans to submit other books to publishers though 🙂

I decided I’m still not ready to write The Geocache Killer, but when I’ve got a handle on thriller/mystery as a genre, I will totally pick this one back up and write it.

At One’s Beast has 26 Goodreads reivews and 18 Amazon reviews, so I’m calling this one done.

Ataxia has 15 Goodreads reviews and 15 Amazon reviews which I think is good enough to check this one off the list

At One’s Beast is available as an audiobook, since early 2015 in fact!

I have been submitting to the Writer’s of the Future of this year and will be submitting to anthologies and other publication opportunities next year.

I haven’t finished Donuts in an Empty Field yet but I’m working on the third draft as we speak for publication June 3rd, 2016.

Goals for 2016

  1. At One’s Beast available in King County Libraries
  2. Donuts in an Empty Field (For the Love of Donuts Book 1) published
  3. Start my retirement fund
  4. Create a food/board game
  5. Watch a roller derby
  6. Finish Flora’s Last Chance for Magic and submit to publishers
  7. Re-revise My Dad the Prepper and send it out to new publishers
  8. Make a box set case for upcoming series For the Love of Donuts using this website
  9. Publish the anthology “Stories from Seattle” with all proceeds to go to my favorite goat rescue PSGR
  10. Finish my brother’s recipe book so he can publish it
  11. Publish Cafe Connections (Aster & Tilde book 1) on 10/31/16
  12. Get professional author photos
  13. Learn a special dance or solo
  14. Bask in a sea of donuts

And now a few charts:

Though I spent the most time writing on Sundays, this was not my most productive day.

**Fun facts on location: I went to 22 different locations to write, not including work or home. I went to the Neverending Bookstore 5 times, St. James 3 times, Verne & Wells 2 times, Issaquah Panera once, the Fall City Roadhouse 2 times, the AFK in Renton once, Bellevue Top Pot once, Costco once, CountrySide Donut House once, Daddy’s Donuts once, Factory Donuts once, North Bend Bar and Grill once, Spinderella once, and the Spotted Cow Once.

Writing at work was most productive for me, though I spent the most time and wrote the most words on my itty bitty Surface Tablet

The Optimist Sees the Donut (For the Love of Donuts Book 2) & The Pessimist Sees the Hole (For the Love of Donuts Book 2)

Genre: Young Adult

Synopsis

Their friendship has been the one unbreakable thing, the one certainty in their lives, but Nichole Adams and Vanessa Smith are developing into their own persons and their individual life dramas distract them from each other.

Vanessa has never had many friends in her life and even though she wanted to stay friends with Nichole, she met new people in college and is moving on. She has school, she has social activities, and a new group of friends even though she can’t seem to find the right guy.

Nichole is jealous of Vanessa’s ease of everything in the real world. Nessa has no trouble with jobs, money, school, or getting and going places. Nichole, on the other hand was preemptively kicked out of her mom’s house after graduating high school and has been floundering ever since. The only thing she has easy in her life is flirting and getting dates, or at least a guy that will let her crash at his house. Nichole doesn’t always have the best of luck with men.

Forever hopeful that things will change, Nichole still clings to the hope that Vanessa will come back to their friendship and be the best friend from high school that Nichole misses. When guy after guy doesn’t work out for her, Vanessa changes more and more of her personality to attract the right guy, drifting farther and farther from who she really is. Something’s gotta give and this story of how friendships get off track, lies become reality, and bad luck tails bad choices will bring you in and around the little town of Sarasota, Florida that you grew to love in book one of the series – Donuts in an Empty Field.

Foodie Fridays: Nano Win Reward – Daddy’s Donuts Kenmore “one of everything”

Nano Stats coming Monday – but I decided to reward myself with an immediate donut foray for accomplishing all my goals in November for NaNoWriMo and a challenge/reward to come in 2016 (stay tuned for what it is on Monday).

20151204 Daddys Donuts Nano reward_one of everything (2)

My first reward for finishing both first drafts of my For the Love of Donuts Book 2’s was to buy “one of everything” from my new favorite donut vendor and local business Daddy’s Donuts in Kenmore.

I chose today as the big day and headed over when they open (8AM) but had to wait for their new machine to be setup, and Daddy himself (Eduardo) gave me a complementary mocha (how nice!) to enjoy while I waited.
