Foodie Fridays: Foley’s Produce

I love Foley’s! They improve the neighborhood immensely and I’m very thankful for the opportunity to buy from a local vendor who sells local produce with that local feel of your neighborhood market. Their produce is amazing in and of itself and they have screaming good deals on several things all the time (Granny smith apples $0.79/lb). They may be a small stand in the midst of a plethora of big box grocers but they have quite the variety, supplying organic options among the regular options, even providing such goods as homemade bread, eggs, honey, and jams. Foley even grows and sells some of his own plants. I highly recommend Foley’s and will be back again and again.

The Maple Valley Creative Arts Council proudly presents the Fifteenth Annual Arts Festival hosted at the Lake Wilderness Lodge (22500 SE 248th, MV). This popular event coincides with the annual community celebration, Maple Valley Days and is the must see highlight of the weekend. Arts Festival will include a live performance area (poetry, music, dance, etc.), indoor gallery space for display of visual arts, artists’ demonstrations and hands on art activities for children.

NEW this year will be a special Saturday Night Open Mic. We are adding this very popular event to celebrate our 15th anniversary of supporting and cultivating local artists .  Along with the amazing talent that Open Mic attracts, we will have our first Poetry Slam.  Also check out the Photo Page for last year’s Arts Festival award winning artwork.

Toiling Tuesdays: Volunteer into that New Job

If it’s all about getting your foot in the door so volunteering those feet is the way to go!

http://blogs.wsj.com/laidoff/2010/03/01/using-strategic-volunteering-to-help-with-the-search/

Even if they say ‘no’ or there are no job openings, this could be the way you squeeze yourself into that company you want to work for. If it doesn’t pan into a ‘real’ paying job then it only adds good fodder for your resume.

Toiling Tuesdays: Don’t Give Up, Laugh

Tired of the struggle? I’ve written past work numbers so many times I’ve re-memorized them. It’s difficult when you know most of the hard work won’t pay off. Once you get that rejection, all the work you’ve put into getting that particular job has to be trashed. The only thing you can do is dust off your original resume and work it for a new job. Don’t give up. Laugh.

Maple Valley Market

What I call my “number two” store. You may not find your veganaise or less popular brands here but you can find the most important part of a community grocery store: the community.

They have local milk and honey and when the local produce is available they supply that as well.

I’m proud to support my local grocer and you should be too (wherever that grocer may be).

Foodie Fridays: Food Porn

Wikipedia defines food porn as: glamourised spectacular visual presentation of cooking or eating in advertisementsinfomercials, cooking shows or other visual media,[1] foods boasting a high fat and calorie content,[2] exotic dishes that arouse a desire to eat or the glorification of food as a substitute for sex.[3] Food porn often takes the form of food photography and styling that presents food provocatively, in a similar way to glamour photography or pornographic photography.”

Food porn for the masses rose out of websites such as instagram and facebook.

Anti-food porn now exists in the form of tickld members (and other websites) where the activity of photographing and informing friends, family, and strangers about your meals is laughed at and is a shameful practice.

There are many reasons why someone you know may have posted food porn.

What can you do about food porn addiction?

The Challenge:

SoCNoC – or Southern Cross Novel Competition is the writing challenge for the Southern Hemisphere, and anyone else who wants to join in.  The goal is to write 50,000 words in 30 days.

Details

The Rules

The Goal:

Though traditionally one would start a new novel and finish it* in the month, I have chosen to finish a novel I have already started. I hope that combining my already 23k words with the 50k I will write in June, I will have a complete novel! As my writing habit is to edit as I go, the novel will be already partially edited!

It takes a village to create a monster. Can one young girl’s sacrifice break the spell or will the whole town be consumed by his voracious anger?

Plot:

Every girl and boy in the village of Frey has been afraid of the beast of the forest for as long as they can remember. It was only ten years ago that he fell into the well of loathing and was consumed by the town’s rage. He made his home in the forest and every year the townspeople sacrificed one of their own to appease his anger. The girl who helped pull him out of the well ten years ago has been chosen as the next sacrifice. Will she be the one to break the spell or will the whole town be consumed by his voracious anger.

The progress:

3/20/13: 720 words!
3/24/13: 2150 words!
4/26/13: 12.4k words!
4/29/13: 16k words!
5/03/13: 18k words!
5/08/13: 20k words!

Wildlife Wednesdays: Birthday Geocache

Unique Geocache Idea #36928

My friend found a cache where there was a birthday card inside. It is a wonderful idea! To sign a birthday card and then when that “log” is full, it gets to be given to someone for their birthday.

Here are some links to birthday themed goecaches:

His premise is that  “You must leave something you would put in a birthday card”

When you type in “Birthday” you get 330 hits!

And one you are supposed* to log on your birthday!
